Myron Martinez Comatosed After Crashing Into House on a Trailer

Myron Martinez

A Ladyville resident is clinging to life at the K.H.M.H.  Myron Martinez was involved in an accident as he headed home on Saturday morning. He collided into a trailer transporting a house on the Philip Goldson Highway. His wife, Myron did not hear about the accident until much later and questions why is it that the house was being transported outside of the established hours for such undertaking.  Here is News Five’s Isani Cayetano with a report.

Isani Cayetano, Reporting

Forty-three-year-old Myron Martinez remains in an induced coma at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, following a near-fatal road traffic accident in the predawn hours of Saturday morning in Ladyville.  The employee of Belize Port Authority was returning home from work around three a.m. when he violently collided into a flatbed trailer transporting a wooden house.

Cynthia Martinez, Wife of Accident Victim

“Nobody come and give me a report and said that mi husband get eena wahn accident.  Ah noh sih nobody.  The police noh come and inform me that he get eena accident and ih deh eena dah hospital or nothing.  Saturday morning, nine o’clock when I went to work, then my son called from Dangriga and said, “Mom, why yoh neva call and seh dat my dad get eena accident.”  Soh I tell ahn I don’t know how your dad get eena accident.”

That’s because, as Cynthia Martinez explains, no one from the Ladyville Police Station reached out to inform her of the accident.  In fact, when she visited the K.H.M.H., her husband was listed as John Doe.

“Nobody did inform me or give me a call or anything.  So when I tell him, “Right now, ah gwein go check da hospital fu sih if yoh dad di deh.”  When I went I found him right there, laid out.”

“What was the nature of the accident?  Can you tell us to the best of your knowledge what happened?”

Cynthia Martinez

“I cyant really give di information [on] what really happened because when I passed the scene the morning but 8:30, nothing was on the road.  Everything clean up.  But I saw the vehicle parked up the street from the police station but wahn mind tell me jump out fu sih if that’s Myron’s vehicle and one told me no, head straight to the city.”

According to this poorly written police report, the driver of the vehicle transporting the house was twenty-five-year-old Athlee Gentle.  He stated that upon reaching the pedestrian ramp between miles ten and eleven on the Philip Goldson Highway, the roof of the house made contact with a wire from a nearby lamppost which caused the sheets of zinc to lift.  Upon stopping a short time thereafter to further examine the damage, he observed a white Mitsubishi Montero approaching.  The next thing he reported hearing was the impact of the collision.

“What condition is Myron in at the hospital at the moment?”

Cynthia Martinez

“Right now he have brain swelling, he have, dehn noh know if di brain damaged, dehn noh know due to the swelling.  So that da weh we di wait fa.  So da between sixty and forty [percent chances of survival] he deh.”

Traffic laws mandate that the transportation of houses on flatbed trucks or trailers be done during daylight hours when there is clear visibility.  It is apparent that Gentle was operating well outside that rule at the time of the incident.

Cynthia Martinez

“I get fu undastand from six to six that should happen and dehn have to have police or dehn have to have di Traffic Department fu guide, fu set something coming fu give way or whatever, but not three in the morning.  Thanks to the four persons weh save ahn we gaan rescue ahn outta di vehicle, four white man from BATSUB, dehn da di one weh save ih life, try pump up ahn fi try tek ahn to Karl Heusner because dehn mi wahn leff he right deh to die.”

According to Martinez’s relatives, there has been no indication from the police department whether Gentle, who is employed by Caribbean Home Exports in Georgeville, will face additional charges for the traffic violation. Reporting for News Five, I am Isani Cayetano.
