P.U.P. Leader: “it is more than just the forty thousand dollars”

After public outrage peaked, the Cabinet Secretary, Carlos Perdomo, on October-thirty first announced that the forty-thousand dollars debt owed by Joshua Perdomo, his son, had been paid.  This is after the government wrote off the loan, citing that Perdomo could not be located. Perdomo was to return to Belize after his study leave, but did not and settled in the U.S. where he is now working. A release from the Perdomo family stated that, “At the time of the signing of the bond many years ago, it was expected that it would be repaid if the terms of the agreement were not fulfilled. With this in mind, my family thought it was the right thing to do.” Leader of the Opposition John Briceño says the debt is more than just the forty thousand dollars.

“It was unfortunate that the entire country had to go through this trauma of where people were outrage that there is a young man t hat was given an opportunity to be able to go study and come back to Belize and he never came back and refused to pay the bond. It was only because of the outrage from the public that then the family members decided to pay the forty thousand dollars. When you think about it, it is more than just the forty thousand dollars. One, no interest was paid on the forty thousand dollars. Two, when Mr. Perdomo was away studying he collected eighty percent from his salary and three, somebody had to be paid to do his work whilst he was away. So when you combine everything it is more than just forty thousand dollars that was spent on a gentleman that took out money, went abroad, studied and refused to come back to Belize.”
