International Radiology Day Celebrated in Belize

International Radiology Day is being celebrated today across the world. In Belize, the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, which counts for the largest number of employees attached to a radiology unit, commemorated the day with a display and a walk through of the facility.  Now, imaging is a critical part for medical diagnosis and is done to support surgeons prior to medical operations in the theatre. This year, the theme for radiology celebrations is centred around sport injuries. News Five stopped in at the K.H.M.H. and spoke with Head Radiologist, Doctor Barnabe Carrillo.

“Anybody that goes to any hospital nowadays has to pass through imaging in some way or the other. It is very important to make clinical decisions. For example nobody nowadays get a surgery without doing some sort of imaging. It can avoid a surgery or it helps in planning a surgery for example. It is also important in patients that have cancer to follow up to see how they are reacting to the medicine. So those are some of the application that imaging has in modern healthcare today. Normally patients are referred from their primary physicians or other specialities. They come here and the first person they meet is the secretary. So they make an appointment; sometimes it is urgent and it can be otherwise. They can call us directly and send the patient right away. So it all depends on what type of patients we are dealing with.”
