Trove of Evidence against Reynaldo Verde Filed

Reynaldo Verde remains locked up in the U.S., facing charges of extortion and attempted extortion. The former Deputy Director of General Tax Services pled not guilty to those charges. Verde was arrested while transiting the U.S., on his return to Belize. He is being accused by the owner of Orchid Bay in Corozal, Chris Williams. Williams alleges that Verde on several occasions sought to collect three hundred and fifty-thousand dollars to wipe away taxes owed by Orchid Bay. Williams reported the matter to the Federal Bureau of Investigation which subsequently looked into the allegation. That investigation led to a secret recording and a sting operation in Corozal where an armed Verde and Williams met. Verde is yet to stand trial, but earlier this week the U.S. government’s attorney filed court documents that list out all the evidence that would be used to prosecute the case against Verde. The trove of evidence includes two recordings of conservations on January nineteenth and November thirteenth, 2017, three recordings of a meeting between Verde and Williams on August twenty-fourth, 2019 and one page of WhatsApp messages. The government has advised its agents and officers involved in this case to preserve all rough notes.
