Faber Says G.O.B. Needs to do a Better Job in Addressing Youth Issues

Patrick Faber

Parts of Faber’s speech also touched on the budget, saying the youth are being short changed since little is spent on the future of the country.  Faber admitted that the government needs to do a better job in achieving change in the youth population.

Patrick Faber, Deputy Prime Minister of Belize

“We spend over a billion dollars in this country. The government spends a billion dollars annually, minimum. You know how much of it goes to work? You know is a billion dollars? That’s a thousand millions if my math is correct. If we spend three million in youth work that’s a lot, too much. Two million dollars and we say that the young people are the future of this country. How much we spend on sports, Mr. Jones? Probably less than what McKenzie, one point nine million. So that adds up two and two. The saving grace in all of this is that we spend almost twenty-six cents of every dollar on education. That is why I am happy that there is the marriage between the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Youth and the Ministry of Sports because together we get two hundred and maybe seventy five million; that is a good chunk. But you know that the bulk of the money that we spend in education is really spent in paying salaries. All the teachers and forgive me the teachers complain their salaries not good but they get a huge chunk of what we spend in the Ministry of Education, Youth Sports and Culture. Why am I saying this? Because if we really want to see change with the young people and you’ve heard me say that that change is in your hand but the government also  needs to do a better job. And you say but Faber you are the government,, what are you talking about? I want your voice to be  joined with mine in unison so that we can make better demands on what it is that we spend our monies on. It is not as easy as saying take more and give it to youth, take more and give it to sports you  know. You have to be willing to say the other things that you are spending your money on because the money is being spend but hey that is not a big priority so when certain elements that we are spending start complaining that they cut my budget. Yes but that is not as important as putting more into youth, sport. We can’t have our cake and eat it. The money is finite.”
