A Protest Fizzles at the Border in the West

Earlier today Belize police were called out to the Benque Free Zone where reports say that a protest was taking place. Three police vehicles, with one carrying riot gears, arrived on scene sometime after two this afternoon but shortly after things got tense, it died down. We were told that a vehicle had blocked the entrance in front of the gate. The issue, we were told, was because of an increase in fees instituted by the Board of the Free Zone. Persons on the scene told us that the protesters were up in arms because of additional fees imposed on cigarettes. When we attempted to cross the border, personnel told us that no one was allowed to have access to the Free Zone area because it was closed off. Just before two-thirty we called the office at the Free Zone and were told that no one was available to speak because they were all in a meeting.
