San Jose Village Resident Killed in Hit & Run; Witness Chases Down Suspect, but Driver Escapes

Jose Antonio Sanker

There was a hit and run on Sunday night in San Jose Village, Orange Walk. It left a forty-year-old constructor worker dead on the George Price Highway. Jose Antonio Sanker had just concluded a birthday celebration with his family and was riding his bicycle when he was knocked down. The driver of the vehicle did not stop to help the injured Sanker, who died on the scene. He had just moved back to the village from San Pedro.  Dalila Ical and News Five’s Duane Moody worked on this report.

The Sanker family was winding down on Sunday night. Forty-year-old Jose Antonio Sanker spent his final moments celebrating his nephew’s birthday, having dinner at his sister’s home followed by a short visit with one of his brother’s. His older sister preferred to speak off camera.

“He was with my nephew. It was my nephew’s birthday and then he reached home. He was drinking, not drunk when he got home and he was given some food. He asked me, Mar, do you have flour? I told him i didn’t, that i just had rice, rice and beans. Well give me some, he said. I took served him a plate of rice and he sat down to eat. I went to take a bath and when i was done he had finished eating and had left. He came here at my little brother’s house. My little brother said that he showered and then they went to sit down by the well where the other guys usually sit. They say he then took a bike and headed to Tomza, the gas Tomza where he was knocked down. It was like fifteen minutes when they came to tell us that he was knocked down. We went to see him but by the time we got there he had died already.”

Sanker was fatally hit between miles sixty two and sixty three on the Philip Goldson Highway, just a couple hundred yards away from home. The culprit fled the scene but according to Sanker’s sister someone saw how it all happened.

“The police said it was a Four Runner, dark in color with wide tires and the vehicle was muddied. Someone followed it up to the bypass but it got lost in that area and they did not see where the vehicle went from there.”

Sanker sustained severe head injuries and is believed to have died instantly. Duane Moody for News Five.
