Separate Shootings on Halloween Night, Two Persons Injured

The City has been free of murders since Troy Polonio was gunned down on Raccoon Street on October fifteenth. But on Thursday night there was an attempt on at a group of persons partying at a house on Lizarraga Avenue even as children were in the neighbourhood truck and treating. The persons scrambled for safety but one was injured. Twenty-nine-year-old Maliek Acosta was wounded on the knee and taken for treatment. Soon after, on the area of the Civic Center shots rang out again. Adam Joseph was shot and injured. Police are investigation Thursday night’s violence. Here is Isani Cayetano with a report.

Isani Cayetano, Reporting

While many were out trick or treating on Thursday night in Belize City, two gunmen were on the prowl for unsuspecting targets.  The first incident took place in the King’s Park area sometime around eight-thirty.  According to an eyewitness, at least seven persons were socializing at a residence on Lizarraga Avenue when someone flew open the gate and entered the property.  Without warning, the unidentified individual produced a handgun and opened fire into the crowd.  The men reportedly made a dash for cover, but not before a bullet struck twenty-one-year-old Maliek Acosta in the right knee.  The observer, who also happened to be among the men gathered at the residence, told News Five that the shooter opened fire indiscriminately into the group, but that he does not believe that Acosta was the intended target.  In the din of vehicular traffic and persons going door-to-door trick or treating, the assailant casually approached the split-level unbeknownst to the occupants.  By the time they realized that the individual’s face was concealed, he pounced on them violently.

An hour later, police responded to a second shooting.  This time, twenty-five-year-old Adam Joseph was the victim of an armed attack during which a lone gunman fired at him while he was riding a bicycle in the vicinity of the Civic Center.  Police say Joseph was heading in the direction of BelCan Bridge when an unknown person shot him once from behind.  The technician, a resident of Ebony Street was rushed to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital where he is listed in critical condition.  It is unclear what precipitated Thursday night’s attacks.  We are told, however, that in the case of the Lizarraga Avenue shooting, the intended target had been injured on a previous occasion when an attempt was made on his life.  A police investigation into the separate incidents remains ongoing.
