‘Peacemaker’ Sedi Won’t Make Appearance at Saldivar’s Convention

National Security Ministry John Saldivar will officially launch his bid for the leadership of the United Democratic Party on Sunday. Saldivar is going toe to toe with Patrick Faber for the post. A social media post by Shyne Barrow asserts that Saldivar enjoys the support of twenty-one standard bearers and their three hundred and thirty-six delegates. Saldivar’s convention will take place at the Belize Civic Center and one man who will not be making an appearance is Wilfred “Sedi” Elrington.  In fact, according to Elrington, Saldivar asked him to appear on a flyer but Elrington declined.

“John Saldivar convention is this weekend; will we see you make an appearance there?”

Wilfred Elrington

Wilfred Elrington, Cabinet Minister

“No, you will not. Actually John spoke to me only yesterday. We had a meeting of the National Security Council of which he was present at my office. I had a meeting there. He asked me and ii told him no. The truth is that I am not and I shouldn’t say this perhaps but I am not really a fan of these political affairs, these conventions and these rallies and the like. I am not really a fan of that. I tried to stay away as much as possible. I told him regretfully that I won’t be there.”

Andrea Polanco

“Has he asked for your support minister? I know that we have seen a banner on Facebook with all these different ministers and constituency representatives who are supporting him. Has he asked for your support?”

Wilfred Elrington

“He did has for my support and I told him no. He asked me if my picture can do on the banner and I told him no. I will tell you why because these contests can sometimes become very bitter. There has to be someone in the party who can speak to the opposing sides when t hey are more depressed or angry and get them to reconcile the position in the interest of the party and in the interest of the nation. I like to see myself in that role so if I don’t know any partisanship to either side I think they will have more trust to listen to me and be persuaded with what I have to say. So it is for that reason that I told him that I know that there is going to be negative fallout. And there has to be somebody who can make peace and I would like to be that peacemaker.”

Andrea Polanco

“But you have already decided who you are going to support.”

Wilfred Elrington

“I have already decided who I am going to support and I make that decision based on the performance on the parties and what they have been doing generally.”
