Foreign Minister Says They Are Working to Address “Barrio Judah” Squatters

You may recall that exactly one month ago we told you about a group of squatters along the Belize/Guatemala border. About ten years ago, close to thirty families were relocated to the border and they have made their way on Belizean territory. We were told that at least two houses have been built on a piece of land belonging to a Belizean. There are reports that lands have been cleared for corn plantation and cattle. A report emerging from out of that area is that the squatters say that the land was given to them by the Mayor of Melchor de Mencos. Today we asked Minister of Foreign Affairs what’s up with the Guats at the border. He says that it is very complex issue and he isn’t sure if it will ever be completely contained, but a lot of effort is being made to address the problem.

Wilfred Elrington, Foreign Affairs Minister

“We are working with the Guatemalan authorities to try to ensure that all those people who are trespassing on our lands there are removed and we are trying our best to prevent them from continuing to trespass. We are actively working with the Guatemalan authorities with respect to that. Also, too, our defence force is working assiduously to try to ensure that things don’t get out of hand and that those trespassers are kept at bay. But it is a difficult task because remember now that there are so many people and the border is so long and then there are so much indigence and poverty in Guatemala that the temptation to come across to Belize is always there. I don’t know – I don’t think there will be a time when we will be able to contain that completely but we are doing all in our power to try to cope with it.”
