Joshua Perdomo’s Debt is Paid Off

The government and the Perdomo family took a beating when the Prime Minister introduced and got the nod of the House on a motion to write-off some forty thousand dollars owed by Joshua Perdomo, the son of the Cabinet Secretary, Carlos Perdomo. It was first said that Joshua could not be located and then that the bond was statute barred.  In 2009, Joshua got the money from G.O.B. to study Forensic in the U.S., under the condition that he returns to Belize to serve.  He completed his study, but did not return and did not pay off the debt instead remaining in the U.S. to work.  Today, a brief statement was issued by the Cabinet Secretary.  It states that the bond has been paid back in full. Perdomo says, “At the time of the signing of the bond many years ago, it was expected that it would be repaid if the terms of the agreement were not fulfilled. With this in mind, my family thought it was the right thing to do.”  He also expresses regret that the situation ever arose. The statement is accompanied by a receipt as proof of payment.  So after months of public outrage, the Perdomos have paid off the debt which stirred controversy and grief.  When it went to the Senate, the motion was defeated, but arguments were made that once approved by the House, it passed.
