Where do Land Rights Complaints go in the Interim?

Cristina Coc

Since being identified as Shelton’s successor, the Maya Leaders Alliance has reached out to Dean Rosa Solario, also an academic administrator at George Washington University Law School. Coc says several complaints have been forwarded to Solario for her perusal ahead of the formal appointment.

Cristina Coc, Spokesperson, Maya Leaders Alliance

“We have reached out to the authority herself.  The court, at the last compliance hearing, basically pressured the government to say that the appointment cannot be unilateral and at the very minimum the appellants should have some say, some feedback as to the person that was being considered for this appointment.  And with that, the government agreed that we would have a meeting with this authority and after that meeting we would provide our response whether or not we give our recommendation for her to be appointed.  We had a wonderful meeting with Dean Solario and realized that as much as the Maya people feel the urgency of having this authority function, she also felt that it was imperative for her to begin her work as soon as possible.  And as a result, because it is in the interest of the Maya people to continue to safeguard and steward our resources, we were able to take the first three complaints that we had previously submitted to Dinah Shelton and forward those directly to Dean Solario.  We took that on our own accord to do because we cannot continue to assume that this will be done by the government.  We are happy to hear that they also submitted the complaints to her, but we are yet to see any result, any concrete resolution of any of these complaints.”
