P.U.P.’s Cases of Alleged Voter Registration Fraud Dismissed

In the lower courts, Chief Magistrate Sharon Frazer this morning dismissed an application brought by the P.U.P.’s Standard Bearer for Belize Rural North, Marconi Leal, against a registered voter in that division.  Leal, through attorney Michel Chebat, filed a claim to have six voters removed from the voters’ list on the grounds that they provided fraudulent information related to their residence. Leal first filed claims against fifty-nine voters, but later abandoned fifty-three. Last week, the Chief Magistrate heard submission regarding one application and today she ruled that the claimants failed to prove to the court that the applicant was not residing at the given address.  Attorney Orson “OJ” Elrington, who represented the applicants, says that the witnesses were not reliable and credible.

“Her verdict was that the chief objector Mr. Leal did not present  iota of evidence to support his objection and the second object Mr. Alvarado who the P.U.P. and Mr. Marconi Leal brought was not, she support my submissions which were that he was neither credible not reliable as a witness. So she ruled in our favour and that the voter remains on the list. Subsequent to that Mr. Leal and his counsel withdrew the final five objections.”

Hipolito Novelo

“The list remains the same.”

“The list remains the same; all voters remain on the list. I think that it is a healthy part of our democracy that persons who genuinely feel and therein lays the question, genuinely feel that voters to not rightfully belong on the list that they should object to those voters. This is just but a part of that process.”
