P.U.P.’s Michel Chebat says Witnesses’ Testimonies were not Enough

Marconi Leal was represented by attorney Michel Chebat, who says that the challenge he faced, was the fact that magistrates do not allow for the registering officers to be cross-examined. He says that in at least three of the cases, no one verified the address of the voters. The registering officer, says Chebat, would have corroborated the assertion.

Michel Chebat, Attorney for Marconi Leal

“We brought up the Standard Bearer who knows the area. We also brought in the neighbor who lives next door to where they say this person resides. He testified at length how long he lives there and how well he knew the house and so forth. But that was not sufficient for the magistrate to remove the person from the list. It is difficult displace somebody once they are on the list and many of the magistrates do not allow you to cross examine the registering officer for the constituency. So that makes it even more difficult. In this case I insisted I was to see the documents to prove who had actually gone to verify and in this matter there are at least three instances where three of the voters we are objecting to nobody had gone to verify. But because the magistrate does not allow us to call the registering offer to testify then it becomes even more difficult.”
