Fatal Accident Claims Life of Well-Known Hattieville Handyman

Balbino Fermin

Balbino Fermin, better known as “Balo” of Hattieville, was knocked down and killed over the weekend. “Balo” was riding his bike when a truck hit him from behind; he died on the spot.  The family reports that residents in the area heard a loud bang when the truck hit Fermin. This evening, the driver of the truck, identified as forty-eight-year-old Belizean-American military officer Stephen Augustine, was arraigned on three charges of manslaughter by negligence, causing death by careless conduct and driving without due care and attention. Augustine was released on bail of six thousand dollars, plus one surety of the same amount. This morning News Five spoke with Fermin’s daughter. She recounted details of the accident. Reporter Andrea Polanco has the story.

Well-known Hattieville resident Balbino Fermin was struck and killed while he rode his bike a short distance away from his home. The fatal accident happened on Sunday afternoon just before one-thirty at mile seventeen on the George Price Highway. Fifty-four-year-old Fermin was knocked down and killed on the spot by this black pickup truck, just minutes after he left his house in the Bainsville Community.

Leticia Bowen, Daughter of Deceased

“He was heading to the shop in Hattieville and when he was riding, according to them, he was riding on the side of the road and then afterwards a vehicle knocked him down. When I heard he was knocked down, I thought that maybe he was still alive or so, but I didn’t know that he passed away on the scene.”

The driver of the vehicle stopped to render aid but it was too late. Bowen says that the force of the impact caused Fermin to suffer massive head and body injuries.

“So, the information that I get is that deh knock him down and he died on the spot. The accident really tek wah – the person weh hit ah, he really tek wah good hit. According to my little brother, my brother told me that his ribs were broken, his jaw bone was broken, and he had a hole on his side. So, he really took a good hit from the vehicle that knocked him down.”

Andrea Polanco

“Right. So you figured that he got hit with force due to speeding?”

“More or less because after when you pass the bumps there is strictly highway.”

Bowen says that her father’s death was sudden and unexpected. She hopes that his fatal accident shows the need for increased road safety measures.

“Usually on the radio you hear that they warn that so many accidents happen to people in other places but never know to come to find out that it would hit home. But we are trying to be strong.  I think they need to put more traffic officers or more speed bumps or more signs because they have signs but it still doesn’t help. Maybe the government should do other stuff for road safety for other people.”

Police say that the driver of the vehicle is in police custody. Reporting for News Five, I’m Andrea Polanco.

Augustine is to re-appear in court on January seventh, 2020.
