3 Seasoned Fishermen are Arraigned for Undersized Conch

Three seasoned Belize City fisherman, who have been in the fishing business for over fifty years, each appeared in court on fisheries offenses they are disputing.   This morning, seventy-five-year-old Oscar O’Brien Mena, seventy-three-year-old Conrad William Daniels, and seventy-two-year-old Edward Meighan were arraigned before Senior Magistrate Aretha Ford for partially and fully processed undersized conch found on board a vessel named “Genie.”  Mena was charged for possession of undersized conch and possession of twenty-four fully processed conch weighing two and three quarter ounces in weight.  He was additionally charged with possession of five partially processed conch, which did not exceed five ounces in weight.  For the fully processed conch, Mena pleaded not guilty, but guilty for the five processed conch.  The fisherman explained to the court that the conch weighs less when it is cleaned than at catch time.   Senior Magistrate Ford has deferred sentencing of Mena on the guilty plea and his next court date is set for November twelfth, 2019. As to Daniels, he was read a charge of possession of ten partially processed conch, which did not exceed three ounces in weight.  Meighan was read a single charge of possession of undersized conchs and twenty partially processed conch, which did not exceed three ounces in weight.  All three fishermen pleaded not guilty and intend to fight the charges.
