Residents Fighting Crime in San Lazaro

The murder of San Lazaro, Orange Walk, resident Basis Hazid Diaz over the weekend is the most recent and most violent crime that has happened within that community in just over two months. Diazs body was found by a search party in a shallow grave off a feeder road.  The murder follows two home invasions in which the home owners were physically attacked and their home burglarized. Two business establishments in neighbouring Trinidad village were also targeted by armed robbers on September thirteenth. The incidents have left villagers in San Lazaro fearful for their safety and as a result, a neighbourhood watch group has been organized. Juan De Dios Moguel is the secretary of the group which will be officially registered this week. He tells News Five that residents have come together to fight crime.

Voice of: Juan De Dios Moguel, Secretary, San Lazaro Neighborhood Watch

“We formed the neighborhood watch and from since then we have been active. we have been having nightly patrols. We have Mr. Jose Sosa as the President, Mr. Kaim Cal as the VIce PResident, Miss Aleida Colindres as the Treasurer, myself as the Secretary and we have twelve other members from each zone because we have zoned off the community. So, we have been very proactive in this fight against the crime. The primary role of the neighborhood watch, we want to make sure San Lazaro safe like before. You know nine o’clock we open our doors and having dinner with our family or visiting friends and we want to have that security again because at this point people are very afraid of even opening their doors like before.”

“The people that have committed this, is there a suspicion from the community that it’s members of the community or other people coming into the community?”

Voice of: Juan De Dios Moguel

“So what the people, the community are commenting is that it is a combination of people from the community and people outside of the community.”

Moguel says that police has began patrolling the village. All patrols conducted by the group is also done with the knowledge and support of the police. We understand that similar efforts are being carried out in Trinidad and August Pine Ridge villages and the hope is to form a network among the communities.
