Early this morning, a gruesome discovery was made inside a wooden house in the Village of Succotz in the Cayo District. Police were called to the scene of a homicide; fifty-six-year-old Juan De La Cruz Carrias was found dead in a pool of his blood. De La Cruz had multiple chop wounds to the back of his head; he had also been stabbed four times to the back and once to the left ear. The discovery was made around eight o’clock and residents in the area soon after gathered to find out what happened.

“Everybody gathered around there and I asked with curiosity and they told me that they killed somebody. I didn’t know exactly who cause a couple lived there, Guatemalans, very young couple with a young baby. And at the same time, we thought maybe the husband of the young girl killed another guy or something. Something went wrong. We didn’t know cause they always kept close, the house locked.”

The deceased man was found dressed in long jeans pants, shirtless and had on a pair of brown boots. De La Cruz worked in construction and lived in Santa Familia Village, Cayo District.

“A few minutes ago, I heard that it is somebody from Santa Familia and my husband called me and told me it is one of his friends. We call him Johnny and I told him you gotta be crazy cause it can’t be him. What would he be doing here this morning or last night—I don’t know when he was killed. And another friend just came and told me the same thing. One of his friends also told him the same thing. Then I got to ask a neighbour to tell me exactly what was the name that they had mentioned in Facebook earlier and when I heard the name and I said that is his name.”

Residents say a young couple had only been renting the house for about four to six months. They didn’t socialize much in the village and were very private with their lives. So when Elisa Guerra Shish says she heard that her husband’s very good friend was the victim, she was in disbelief. Family and friends, as well as authorities are trying to figure out what De La Cruz was doing not only in the village, but inside that house where he did not socialize.

“I understand that he was chopped and stabbed. I know he is close to your family, your husband. At any point did he complain any at all of having problems with anybody?”

Elisa Guerra Shish

“Well no.”

Duane Moody

“Juan didn’t live here?”

Elisa Guerra Shish

“No. That’s why we were so surprised that he does not live here and from Santa Familia. What was he doing here?”

Duane Moody

“And at that house cause it is not known that he knows those people.”

Elisa Guerra Shish

“Yes….surprisingly we didn’t expect something like that.”
