Guatemalan President Bashes CICIG at UN General Assembly

Jimmy Morales

Morales devoted much of his speech and time bashing the United Nations-backed International Commission Against Impunity in Guatemala (CICIG). Last year, President Jimmy Morales did not approve the renewal of the mandate and expelled the commissioners of the CICIG which has brought down a Guatemalan president and vice president, as well as other high-ranking officials. The Commission was established in 2006 to help combat impunity and corruption. Morales began waging a campaign against CICIG in 2017, after the commission opened an investigation into the president, his brother and son. That war continued on the world stage of the UN General Assembly where Morales accused the CICIG of undermining the governance of his country.

Jimmy Morales, President of Guatemala

“It did not respect the law of our country. It weakened the autonomy of our institutions. It put at risk social peace and it undermined the governance of our country. The most saddest and worrying is that it did this with the consent of the United Nations. And it did it under the facade of combat of corruption and impunity which gave it the ideal narrative to politicize justice and to condemn out politics. We will not allow it. We did not allow it because we are a free, sovereignty and independent country since 1821. When we speak of independence and sovereignty, I would like to inform this general assembly that while the mandate of the commission has ended the consequences of its action should be investigated thoroughly.”
