Attorney Offers Services to Collect Joshua Perdomo’s Debt

Mark Lizarraga

The debate got testy among Senators on Wednesday when Write-off Number Two Motion was introduced. The write-off is for forty thousand dollars owed to the Government of Belize by Joshua Perdomo, son of Cabinet Secretary Carlos Perdomo. Perdomo was approved twenty-seven months of study leave to pursue a Master’s degree in Forensic Genetics at the University of North Texas and was bonded for three years. The agreement was that after completing his studies, Perdomo would return and serve his country. He, however, failed to resume his duties and his service was terminated on September first, 2011. The government claims it cannot locate Perdomo so it moved to write off the loan. The write-off sparked criticism on the government. And according to Private Sector Senator Mark Lizarraga, attorney Audrey Matura wrote to the government, offering her legal services to attempt to collect the monies. The letter, however, failed to be reviewed by the respective house committee.

Mark Lizarraga, Senator for Private Sector

“It appears that the letter that was written to the committee was not delivered to the committee on time. That is what I am hearing today by way of the clerk. Nevertheless an offer was made in writing and it certainly was made before the House met on it. The question arises why was the offer to collect then from that attorney was not accepted or why it was not looked at. So it is disappointing that the letter was not delivered on time but I think there was ample time for recognition of the letter or even delivery of the letter. Apparently some of the ministers did not know of the letter and I believe if there was an genuine offer by an attorney to move and to collect on the guarantee or the bond, it is something that should be taken or still looked at as a matter of fact to be taken into consideration.”

Michael Peyrefitte, U.D.P. Senator

“Let me explain to both Senator Lizarraga and to this phantom attorney that he quotes. The Attorney General’s Ministry is the government’s lawyer. That ministry is the chief legal officer under the constitution to the government. The government is the Attorney General’s client. We deal with matters that are referred to us. If you want to know the details of every write-off motion you could simply ask for it and you will get it. You don’t have to come here and pretend like there is some mystery behind every matter that we bring here. There is no mystery. This is Open Paaki because that is the purpose of Government to bring it to the people whether it is uncomfortable, whether you don’t like it, whether it is popular or unpopular. Bring it to the people; that is the difference between the U.D.P. and the P.U.P.”
