An Elderly Man is Sentenced to 7 Years for Burglary

Elsworth Leslie

A sixty-one-year-old man, who was caught burglarizing a gift shop, learnt a lesson the hard way when he was convicted of burglary and sentenced to seven years behind bars, even though he did not end up with the items he had taken.    The sentence was imposed by Magistrate Emmerson Banner on Elsworth Leslie for a December eighteenth, 2018 incident at the Altun Ha Site. There, he was caught burglarizing the gift shop of Keith Wallace.  The elderly man was detected by park ranger Edwin Augustine.  Augustine testified in trial that he heard noises and then saw Leslie exit the gift shop. He said he told Leslie to leave what he had taken and go.  Leslie then took out seven bowls he was carrying in a knap sack. While Augustine said he would not report the matter, he did call Wallace to notify him of the burglary. Though he admitted he had burglarized the shop, but did not steal the bowls, Leslie was convicted for burglary and handed down a stiff sentence.
