Alleged Voter Registration Fraud Goes before the Chief Magistrate

Orson “OJ” Elrington

Today, members from both political parties were back before Chief Magistrate Sharon Fraser on a series of challenges of voters registered in a division where they do not reside. In the morning session, which concluded just after midday, the case brought against Deputy ComPol Edward Broaster was heard. Broaster, according to the voter’s list has registered as living at Chon Saan Palace at number one Kelly Street, even though he is known to reside in the Lake Independence Division. Taking the stand on the P.U.P.’s behalf was Caribbean Shores’ ground commander Paul Ferguson. But the challenge did not go as anticipated by the P.U.P., and the claim was withdrawn.

Orson “OJ” Elrington, Attorney for U.D.P.

“I think that, like you said, they challenged to the transfer of Mister Broaster into Caribbean Shores and the self-proclaimed ground commander of the P.U.P., Mister Paul Ferguson, who under oath said he is the ground commander of the P.U.P….they submitted that Mister Broaster does not reside in Caribbean Shores. However, a peculiar turn of circumstances took place in which under oath, Mister Paul Ferguson admitted that his sister, Paula Ferguson. Because he was basing his evidence on the fact that he goes to visit his sister Paula Ferguson every day and he sees Mister Broaster, but he admitted under evidence that his sister, Paula Ferguson has resided in Lake I for the past twenty years uninterrupted. But guess what? Paula Ferguson is registered at his very same address in Caribbean Shores. Under oath, he says that he believes that Paula Ferguson can be registered there because it is her mother’s address and because it is their mother’s address, she can register there; not because she resides there.”

“So you are saying that he is complaining that Mister Broaster is committing afoul of the registration and his sister is doing the same thing?”

Orson “OJ” Elrington

“Let us go beyond that. First, again this is under oath. This is not in front of the court of public opinion; these are admissions under oath in court. After that, he made the declaration that he found it suspicious that there were persons with different surnames registered at number one Kelly Street. So under cross examination, my co-counsel, Mister Aldo Salazar, asked him to name the persons who are registered at his very own address. Mister Paul Ferguson could not name the persons who were living at his address. In fact, of the persons registered he named only…amongst those he named included his sister Paula Ferguson.”

In the afternoon session that dealt with voters in the Belize Rural North constituency, Elrington told News Five that fifty-six of the claims brought by the P.U.P. were thrown out and six others will return before the Chief Magistrate on October fifteenth, 2019.
