Land Tax Amnesty Programme to be Implemented

Government announced today that the Ministry of Natural Resources will be implementing the Partial Remission of Land Tax Arrears Programme which is also known as the Land Tax Amnesty Programme.  The programme was passed in the House and Senate in September, but there was debate about who was benefitting and the fact that while government was writing off taxes, it is amassing loans.  The amnesty is said to be in the range of ninety million dollars which government will not collect.  Details of the initiative have been released; land owners who owe land taxes will be able to settle or manage arrears during a six-month period beginning on October seventh, 2019.  Land owners can benefit from a twenty-five percent discount on the outstanding tax for each financial year and the waiver of interest on discounted arrears.  The land owners, however, have to acknowledge full arrears before the discount.  They can only participate on land situated outside of a city or town and pay in full the discounted arrears for each year before the end of the six-month period.  The government stipulates that failure to settle arrears within the six-month period will result in the account reflecting all arrears outstanding prior to the commencement of the programme. Persons interested in participating can visit the Ministry of Natural Resources headquarters in Belmopan or any of the Lands and Surveys District Offices.
