Mayor Bernard Wagner Takes the Stand in Lawsuit Brought by Former City Administrator

The case against the Belize City Council brought by former City Administrator Candice Miller adjourned around four-thirty this afternoon in the courtroom of Justice Courtney Abel. Mayor Bernard Wagner was on the stand throughout the day being cross-examined by Miller’s attorney, Magali Perdomo.  Miller was let go from City Hall back in 2018 when the Wagner administration took over. She was first placed on suspension and then terminated for dereliction of duties.  Miller is now taking the council to court for wrongful termination and is seeking roughly half a million dollars. The council is counter suing her for a million dollars for dereliction of duties.

The court today heard Mayor Wagner’s explanation as why the Council was left indebted with over a million dollars.  There was reference to a payment of fifty-nine thousand dollars to Gilly Franklin for road works, which the council says was too excessive and paid the day after they assumed office.  The mayor was questioned about statements he made to the media leading up to the termination of Miller; Perdomo also attempted to establish that Wagner had blocked Miller from carrying out her duties.  Attorney for CitCo, Anthony Sylvester provided a brief statement following today’s proceedings.

“The trial continues tomorrow. There is still to be cross-examining. We cannot comment at this moment, unfortunately, but as the judge indicated, hopefully everything will be concluded by Friday. And as indicated, if all goes well, he may give his decision by Friday evening. So that’s where we are.”

Cross – examination of the Mayor will continue on Thursday.
