Fish Kill Reported in New River in Libertad Village

There is another fish kill being reported in the New River, but this time, the reports are coming out of Libertad Village in the Corozal District where concerns grow over the pollution in the water. A video shows hundreds of small fish floating around in the river while some struggled to stay alive.  Officials of the Department of the Environment had said it would happen as the sediments in the New River begin to flush out with the increasing rainfalls. In a related incident, on Tuesday, the Sarteneja Alliance for Conservation and Development responded to a call of a dead dolphin calf on the shores of Cerros Sands Resort, near Copper Bank Village, Corozal District. A necropsy was conducted on the dolphin which determined the cause of death to be “internal bleeding due to muscle bruises in the chest area as a result of ‘blunt trauma.”  While it was widely suspected that the creature died as a result of the contamination from the New River flowing into the sea, a government release stated that this was not associated with the death of this dolphin. The release adds that when it comes to the water quality of the Corozal Bay, it has not found any evidence of degraded water quality conditions as those currently observed in the New River.
