PM Says Nothing Official on Gapi’s Candidacy

Gaspar Vega

There is still no confirmation regarding Gaspar Vega’s candidacy in Orange Walk North, despite his intention to rouse political activity in that constituency leading up to the November 2020 General Elections.  U.D.P. Chairman Alberto August has weighed in on speculations that Vega is mounting a comeback, admitting to News Five on Wednesday that nothing official has been submitted to the secretariat regarding his candidacy.  Today, we asked PM Barrow about Vega’s recent involvement in the village council elections and what that means in the context of vote seeking activities going forward.

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“I don’t know that that is so.  Certainly as you all reported on, the last Sunday of the village council elections, Gaspar certainly came out to help Orange Walk North.  I think we had the biggest villages on that Sunday, Trial Farm, San Jose and San Pablo.  So from then it was clear that he was interested in becoming active in terms of supporting the constituency.  You know that the standard bearer who had been chosen in a convention had resigned, but even at the time of those village council elections the standard bearer hadn’t been particularly active and there was another gentleman who acted as a kind of caretaker representative almost.  That was the person in particular that Gaspar was helping.  Look, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that.  He’s never left the United Democratic Party, he has been inactive for these couple of years, doesn’t attend house meetings but he is still a U.D.P.  Whatever happened in the past, I don’t think can ever disqualify him from wanting to assist in a constituency that he has represented for so long.  As far as I know, that’s exactly what it is and all that it is.”

Isani Cayetano

“No word to you that he has intentions of offering himself for candidacy?”

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“No sir.”
