Over 1,900 Clinical Confirmed Cases of Dengue in Belize

The number of confirmed dengue cases in the region continues to grow and in Belize, since the start of the year, there are currently one thousand nine hundred plus clinically confirmed cases of the disease, primarily concentrated up north in Orange Walk, down south in Stann Creek and in Cayo to the west. According to epidemiologist Doctor Russell Manzanero of the Ministry of Health, the figure is closer to three thousand cases if it includes those persons accessing the health system without laboratory confirmation. Fortunately, there have been no reported deaths as a result of dengue, when compared to the region.

“Areas that are still reporting high numbers are still Orange Walk; Stann Creek right now is actually reporting an increase in cases and the Cayo district as well. All other areas are reporting as well, but these are the areas that we are trying to see what is happening there. So those are coming from those areas. In regards to severe dengue, we do continue to report cases, but I believe the management that is being done at the hospital level is adequate so we are seeing a good response there. So we are not really seeing many cases of severe dengue. But remember severe dengue actually comes about when you have been exposed before to one of the stereotypes and if you are being exposed again to dengue then that situation can happen.”
