First Cousins Killed in Belmopan Double Murder

Gruver Delgado & Herman Valladares

A rash of murders has the community on edge in Belmopan. We start with a double murder in the San Martin area of Belmopan on Saturday morning. Two cousins, both minors, were shot following a squabble with two other minors, one of them merely thirteen-years-old.  The shooters lived in the same neighbourhood as their victims who grew up together.  It is not known what led to the shooting of cousins Gruver Delgado and Herman Valladares, but there is reason to believe it was gang related. The two had just concluded the delivery of tortillas when they were executed. Here is News Five’s Isani Cayetano.

Cousins Gruver Delgado and Herman Valladares were gunned down here in the San Martin area of Belmopan on Saturday morning.  The pair reportedly had an altercation with two other individuals sometime earlier and when they caught up with them thereafter, both relatives were met with lethal gunfire.  Manuel Delgado recalls off-camera receiving word of the deadly shooting.

Manuel Delgado, Father and Uncle of Deceased

“Da Saturday morning was a beautiful morning fu we,  Da morning we mi deh in the church close to my house, we mi do barbecue da morning for the funds for the church.  We mi di sell barbecue da morning when around 9:45 I receive wahn call from my sister and tell me, “Manuel, Manuel, dehn kill yoh son!  Dehn kill Chando!”  I tell yoh, when I hyah that I tell my gyal, I seh let’s go because dehn kill Chando.  So we drop everything deh, the microphone and we run to tek my car and we run to see weh this happen.”

It happened here near this dried up stream in a distant part of the city.  Several eyewitnesses saw what happened, including Delgado’s elder sister.  The double homicide has stunned this small Hispanic community.

ACP Joseph Myvett, Head National Crimes Investigation Branch

“Sometime around 9:30 a.m., Belmopan police were called to an area in San Martin, Belmopan whereupon arrival they observed the body of a Hispanic male lying in a creek which did not have water at the time.  He was later identified as Gruver Delgado.  As a result, he was removed from there and taken to the Western Regional Hospital for treatment where he succumbed to injuries whilst undergoing those treatments.  What the police know so far is that Delgado, along with Herman Valladares, was hanging out in that area when they were approached by persons where an argument ensued and one of those persons pulled out a firearm and fired at Delgado.  As a result, Valladares was also fired upon and he too, in an attempt to escape from the area after he was fired upon was caught up by those two persons and he too was shot.”

According to Delgado, his nephew Herman was returning from delivering flour tortillas for his mother when the deadly encounter occurred.

The suspects, a pair of teenagers of Salvadoran nationality, are being sought in connection with the murders.  It is believed that the incident may have been gang-related.

ACP Joseph Myvett

“In relation this, police are seeking two suspects, one of whom I believe is eighteen and at the time of the incident he was accompanied by a thirteen-year-old minor whom we are also seeking. What we can say though is that the victims and the alleged shooters were familiar with each other.”

Gruver and Herman are first cousins who basically grew up together in the same household.  Their killer, according to the father, lives just a stone’s throw away from their home on St. Joseph Street.
