Two More Honduran Nationals Charged With Recent Drug Plane Landing

There are two more arrests in connection with a drug bust that yielded police over one thousand three hundred kilos of cocaine. Thirty-six-year-old Terencio Mejia Cruz and fifty-three-year-old Jacobo Yovany Mejia Garcia were charged today with conspiracy to abet to import a controlled drug.  It is suspected that both Honduran nationals are tied to the landing of a drug plane on the night of September eighth in a remote area off the Coastal Road.  They were charged jointly in the courtroom of Senior Magistrate Tricia Pitts Anderson with a count in relation to one thousand, three hundred and forty-one kilograms of cocaine that was found onboard the aircraft.  They both appeared unrepresented and bail was not offered to the pair due to the quantity of the drug.  This afternoon, Commissioner of Police Chester Williams also provided an update on those additional arrests.

“Those two individuals were charged with conspiracy to import drugs into the country.  So I believe they went to court this morning and should be in prison by now.”

Isani Cayetano

“That being the case, are you at liberty then to share their names, their nationality, etc?”

Chester Williams

“They are both Honduran nationals.  I don’t have their names on hand but I will have the press office send the names out to you.”

Isani Cayetano

“My final question on that end, what is the status of the other men who are hospitalized?  Are they pending discharge and then arraignment?”

Chester Williams

“Yes, they are still hospitalized and once they are released from hospital then they will be charged and arraigned.”

“Do you believe that those persons picked up elsewhere were part of the local effort to arrange this illegal landing?”

Chester Williams

“How could they be?  They were Honduran nationals, they’re not Belizeans and they came into the country the same time as those who were caught by the plane.  And our investigation shows that they were at the landing site and they were among those who escaped when the police moved in to intercept the plane and its content.”

Last Wednesday, retired Mexican pilot Miguel Cruz Meseguer, along with   Honduran national David Noe Orellano Discua and two others were also charged with drug-related offenses in respect of the aircraft and its illicit contents.  They have all been remanded to the Belize Central Prison while two others remain under police guard at the K.H.M.H. after being shot during an exchange of gunfire.
