New art centre opens at SJC

Story Picture
After the donation of computers at Belize Rural High, Lord Ashcroft moved on to Saint John’s College for the launching of the Belize Centre for Art Education and Culture. The new facility was made possible through the generosity of the Belize government, the government of Taiwan and the Michael Ashcroft Foundation.

Yasser Musa, Art Teacher, SJC

“Art needs a kind of space where students can feel free and open. So finally this idea has come to fruition, the idea of having a central place where art education can take place. And there are many things we want to get done. Aside from continuing with the SJC programme, the high school and junior college, we want to offer courses to the greater community. Whether it’s artists or people who are interested in art, who don’t necessarily want any kind of formal education or have any kind of formal education, but just want to learn some kind of skill. And we are also going to appeal to U.B. and other tertiary level institutions for serious persons in the area of artists to come and kind of have credits that would be transferable over to their institution. There will be different level classes. We’ll be offering classes in drawing, painting, computer design, print making, three dimensional designs and or sculpture and ceramics.”

Musa says that the programme already has over two hundred students between the High School and Sixth form and expects the institution to attract at least three hundred more.

DUE TO A PUBLIC AND BANK HOLIDAY ON MONDAY, THE NEXT NEWSCAST WILL BE ON TUESDAY, MAY TWENTY-SECOND.
