Two adults and a sixteen-year-old are charged for Christopher Chi’s murder

A minor has been arraigned for the murder of Christopher Chi, his thirteen-year-old friend from the village of Yo Creek in the Orange Walk District. The minor was arraigned this afternoon in the Magistrate Court in Orange Walk. Another minor and an adult are expected to be taken to court on Monday. Christopher was last seen riding with one of the accused persons. Five days after he went missing, his body was found inside a culvert off a feeder road not far from the village. Distraught family members cannot comprehend the circumstances of the murder allegedly at the hands of persons well-known to Christopher. Hear is Dalila Ical with the following story.

Two adults and a sixteen year old male minor stand accused of murdering thirteen-year-old Christopher Chi. They were charged today but only the minor, who was charged for the crime in the presence of his mother, appeared before Senior Magistrate Patricia Arana in the Orange Walk Magistrate Court. The minor’s family has retained the services of Attorney Marcel Cardona.

“The Magistrate indicated to him that for the offense of Murder with which he has been charged with, she does not have the jurisdiction to grant him bail. So he has been remanded up until I believe November 5 of this year.”

“You mentioned that 3 of them are jointly charged for murder, but only 1 of them came to court. What happened to the other 2?”

Marcel Cardona

“I believe that the other 2 are adults, are persons over the age of 18 and accordingly they shall be arraigned separately for the minor. So the minor was processed this afternoon and the other 2 will be processed separately. Id o not know the details as to the other 2 though because if do not represent the other 2 individual, I only represent the minor.”

A chilling fact in this case is that those accused were close friends of the young boy and also live in Yo Creek Village.  Police say evidence is showing they turned on him for drug related reasons. Still, the family and those close to them cannot comprehend how or why this has happened.

“Well, that’s the big question right now, why. All the family want to know because they never had conflict, they never had problem. That’s a serious situation. That’s the point of interest to know what was wrong or what wa the case. To me there was no case because they were friends”

“Not a troublesome guy?”

Manaces Sanchez

“No, no, no. like we say that is the big question, why, because none of the family has problems, not the parents, nobody.”

Chi’s family was present at this afternoon’s arraignment but refused to comment on the new development in the investigation.  In our interview with the deceased’s brother, Efrain Chi on Wednesday, he said that, unsuspecting of what had happened to his little brother, they sought one of the accused. That individual, though reluctant at first, had wound up joining their search for the child.

“His mother is a good friend with we. We said well, we are trying to find Christopher because Christopher is missing. Where do you think Christopher went? He said we got a friend probably in Orange Walk where he is. I said well lets go. He was willing and he got in the car with us and we drove to Orange Walk and went to different places. Up to there, he denied, he denied that he don’t know nothing”

Young Christopher’s badly decomposed body was found five days later. He had been beaten to death and disposed of in a culvert along a sugar road several miles from his home. The accused minor’s attorney says he has denied playing a part in his friend’s death.

Marcel Cardona, Attorney for Sixteen-year-old

“I spoke with my client very briefly and my client maintains the position that he is not responsible for the murder or the death, or for having cause the death of Mr. Christopher Chi, no. Accordingly I will have to take further instructions in relation to that as time goes by no. but the police could only allot me a certain amount of time and during that time that was in a nutshell what the client informed me of, that he is not guilty of the offense which he has been charged with.”
