Two Hondurans Taken Into Custody, Any Link to Recent Drug Plane?

There are developments tonight in respect of a drug plane that landed off the Coastal Road at an illegal airstrip on Sunday night. On Thursday afternoon, the alert owner of a resort on the George Price Highway called the police after two men were seen sitting for some time inside a parked vehicle at the parking lot of the resort. Because they were acting suspiciously, the police was contacted. The two men, who are from Honduras, remain in custody. So far four men with different nationalities have been arrested and two others are hospitalized resulting from a shoot-out with the police after the plane landed. It is expected they too will be charged. Here is News Five’s Isani Cayetano.

A pair of men, both Honduran nationals, was picked up by police on Thursday evening near the outskirts of Belmopan.  The men had checked in to a nearby resort sometime earlier and were observed by members of staff to be acting suspiciously.  The police were called to the scene and they responded promptly, taking both men into custody.  While charges are yet to be brought against either of the two men, it is believed that they may have been involved with the landing of an executive jet laden with a sizeable haul of cocaine in the early hours of Monday morning.  The aircraft touched down on a makeshift runway in a remote area off the Coastal Road, but was met by a team of law enforcement officers who had been tipped off of its passage through Belizean airspace, as well as its landing.  There was a brief firefight during which several persons received varying degrees of gunshot injuries.  Stowed inside the airplane in a number of bales were almost three thousand pounds of cocaine.  Local authorities had been fed intelligence that an aircraft had departed Venezuela presumably en route to Belize, prompting an operation which led to the arrest of four men.  Sixty-nine-year-old Miguel Cruz Meseguer, a Mexican national, forty-three-year-old Ecuadorian national Juan Pablo Larrea Cruz, and Hondurans Carlos Humberto Henriquez Gomez and David Noe Orellana Discua.  Two others remain hospitalized under police guard at the KHMH where they are recovering from gunshot wounds.  As we said, police strongly believe that the men they picked up outside of Belmopan on Thursday may be linked to the drug plane landing earlier in the week.
