Is PSU’s Hilltop Headquarters Being Sold Off Once Again?

Is the Belmopan headquarters of the Public Service Union up for sale once again? A social media post on September eleventh by Real Estate Belize lists the one acre Hilltop property among several land deals. The parcel was quietly sold off to Chinese businessman Xin Ni in November 2018 by the Belmopan City Council in a questionable land sale. At the time the P.S.U. had a lease for the property for seventeen years and was in discussions to acquire the property when it was secretly acquired by Simplex Design Company Limited. While the union threatened legal action against Mayor Khalid Belisle and the Belmopan City Council, Prime Minister Barrow also stepped in to see how the union could regain ownership of the property. Just prior to an election of a new executive of the union, a demonstration had been held outside of Belmopan City Hall regarding the property. So, when we contacted City Administrator Ralston Frazier earlier today, he told News Five that the parcel in question has been treated as private property ever since it was sold off last year. He says that no one at the Belmopan City Council was aware of it being put for sale a second time. When we contacted P.S.U. President Gerald Henry about the online ad, he told us that he was unaware of the post.
