Kareem Francis scrambles to post bail

Tonight twenty-nine-year old Kareem Francis, who has beaten more than one murder charge in the past, remains in police custody until he can pay an old fine then post bail granted to him for the theft of a beach cruiser bicycle. Francis appeared this morning before Magistrate, Khadeen Palmer. Allegations against the George Street resident are that on September tenth, 2019, he misappropriated the bicycle of Paula Gentle. Francis pleaded not guilty to the charge and was granted bail of a thousand dollars. But court records show he was in debt to the court in the sum of thirty dollars for riding up a one way street. So he was told he had to pay the old fine before posting bail. Gentle claims that Francis grabbed the bicycle from another person and rode off with it.  In May 2010, Francis was freed of the 2017 murder of Jomo Lamb on Kraal Road. He walked free because of a 2009 change in the Indictable Procedure Act which allows for testimonies to be read in court if the witness is afraid to personally take the stand. In this case, Shakira Castellanos, abstained from testifying that she saw Francis in the vehicle that Lamb’s killers were travelling in. The jurors were not convinced by the statement presented in her absence so Francis was acquitted of murder. Lamb was shot five times; the bullets came from a red vehicle that stopped in front of Lamb. In his defense, Francis simply denied being anywhere near the scene of the shooting.
