Taiwanese Ambassador to Belize: “I must say we do value this wonderful friendship”

Remus Li-Kuo Chen

Turning to Politics, in August, Caribbean Shores Area Representative Kareem Musa made an unofficial visit to mainland China. He was accompanied by a P.U.P. contingent comprised of Belize City Deputy Mayor Oscar Arnold, Councilor Michael “Chips” Noralez and attorney Kevin Arthurs. According to Musa, the visit was as a result of an invitation by Johnston Ou, Chairman of the Belize Chinese Association, who has refuted such assertion. The visit itself caused major diplomatic controversy since Belize has official diplomatic relations with the Republic of China, Taiwan, which has been losing global allies to China. Belize is one of its remaining allies. When asked if the Taiwanese government was concerned about the trip and what it would mean in terms of a shift of policy in the future, Taiwanese Ambassador to Belize Remus Li-Kuo Chen says that Taiwan values Belize’s wonderful friendship.

“For this relationship that we have enjoyed for thirty years it is a very, very mutually beneficial one because whenever there is such a great need from Taiwan Belize always stands strongly, firmly for us whenever we have aspirations for joining and contributing and sharing with the international community such as our eager desire to be a member and to be invited as an observer for United Nations or its affiliated organizations such as WHO, Interpol, UNFCCC. Each and every time, each and every occasions our friends in government, private sector, NGOs they are all very supportive of our efforts and aspirations to have our voices to be heard through your strong support in these international arena. In conclusion I must say we do value this wonderful friendship.”
