Friends turn on fourteen-year-old killing him; Police say it is drug related

A chilling murder took place in the Orange Wald District in the past few days. A fourteen-year-old boy from the village of Yo Creek died a horrible death. His head was smashed and he was brutally beaten. The body of the minor was then stuffed in a culvert and found in a feeder road off the San Lorenzo road.  His family had reported him missing five days ago and on Tuesday, the gruesome discovery was made. The motive for the murder has not been ascertained but it is suspected that it may be drug related. Two of three suspects, who he knew well, are in detention. Here’s that story.

Dalila Ical, Reporting

Police removed Christopher Chi’s badly decomposed body from inside this culvert located on a sugar road several miles from his home in Yo Creek village and just a few yards off the San Lorenzo Road.

According to family members, the thirteen-year-old appeared to have been beaten and his head smashed The child met a brutal end, but even more shocking is that it was at the hands of persons he considered friends.  His brother Efrain was one of many persons in the village who saw him leave with a long time friend on a motorcycle.

Efrain Chi, Brother of Deceased

Efrain Chi

“I was coming from work I work construction over here with my friend. And I was coming around about quarter to five or five, I don’t have the exact time, well I meet him there at the bus stop and from the next side of the bus stop, I asked him where are you heading. He said he is going to take a ride with his friend.

Dalila Ical

“And that is the only thing he told you.”

Efrain Chi

“Yes.”

Dalila Ical

“He did not mention which friend this was?”

Efrain Chi

“Yes, he mentioned which friend. And I saw the person who took my brother on the motorbike”

That would be the last time he saw Christopher alive. He says he had no reason to be concerned for the safety of his younger brother.  Christopher and his friends would frequently take bike rides and return home, but this time he did not.

Efrain Chi

“Seven o’clock eight o’clock nine o’clock and that time I really say something happened. From there I said I take my bathe again and I my pa come and tell me, Efrain, Christopher noh reach yet. I get up five o’clock in the morning and my father got up five o’clock. And he told me Christopher never come sleep last night. Well from earlier I felt like something is going wrong, something is going wrong.”

That morning Chi went to work and returned in the afternoon to find Christopher still missing. They called the friend he was last seen with but that friend would not give the family a clear answer. This was when they started their search.

Efrain Chi

“I call all my brothers and asked what’s going on and we start to make a search for my brother. He came by his car because he has a pickup, he just bought a car and we went to orange Walk to ask people, ask people and they don’t know or haven’t seen our brother. He is a very popular [person, everybody know him.”

Following a second call to Christopher’s friend, he agreed to help look for him

Efrain Chi

“He said we got a friend probably in Orange Walk where he is. I said well lets go. He was willing and he got in the car with us and we drove to Orange Walk and went to different places. Up to there he denied, he denied that he don’t know nothing.”

By this time, a Jasmine alert had been issued for the missing teen. Five days later police found his body. The main suspects in his homicide are three of his closest friends.

Manaces Sanchez, Family Friend

“They are friends, they have never had trouble, I always see them on the motorcycle, playing, talking under a tree. They are friends it’s not like they are enemies or anything.”

Dalila Ical

“So this was shocking?”

Manaces Sanchez

Manaces Sanchez

“Of course, shocking for all the village because if I have a friend and he is my friend for something like that to happen, the whole entire village would handle this.”

Dalila Ical

“As somebody who knew him very well, do you know any reason why his friends would want to do this?”

Manaces Sanchez

“Well, that’s the big question right now, why. All the family want to know because they never had conflict, they never had problem. That’s a serious situation.”

Police have since detained three persons, two of them minors. And while they were all friends, police say evidence is showing they turned on Christopher because of drugs.

Chester Williams

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police

“From what the investigation is showing is that the young boy was killed by his own associates. Including the person who was on the motorcycle, he may have played some roll in the murder. He is one of the suspects, he is a thirty-three year old. And the other two suspects are fifteen year old. So if you can see again, two minors are involved. And from the investigations again, it shows that the killing may have been somewhat drug related. It looks more like peddling.”

Dalila Ical

“So, that would mean that the fourteen year old was a part of this entire process?”

Chester Williams

“Well like I said it is somewhat drug related. I am not going to say the one who got killed…I don’t normally delve into the character of a person who has been murderers. Burt I know those persons who are accused of killing him, they are involved in drugs. I know that the police have released one of the suspect but they have since went back to detain that person because of additional information that has arisen.”

Christopher was laid to rest today.
