Villagers to be charged for assaulting police officers in San Victor Village

Corozal Police continue to look into the incident in which a police officer shot and injured two men in San Victor, Corozal. The village is a hot spot for the flow of contraband goods into Belize because of its proximity to the Rio Hondo. Commissioner of Police Chester Williams says their investigations show that the officer acted in self-defence. He say, they are also expecting to detain two of the injured men who were taken for treatment in Mexico.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police

“We are still looking at the circumstances as well as looking at those persons who were involved and who may have also cause injuries to officers. We have not been able to locate those persons and you rightly pointed out, two of the persons were injured and taken to the Mexican side to seek medical attention. And so, we are waiting for them to be released from  the hospital in Mexico and if they come over to Belize then we will see what we can do to proceed with that matter.”

Reporter

“In the conference the last time, the briefing you held, you mentioned officers located one person, Mr. Novelo, what of the second person?”

Chester Williams

“Still being sought.”

Reporter

“So, no word from him so far?’

Chester Williams

Chester Williams

“No.”

Reporter

“The villagers, sir, what kind of charges can they face should the police gather enough evidence against those who were part of the forty add mob that officers reported attacked them?’

Chester Williams

“Well, the police officers were injured and so the first charge will be whatever degree the doctor certified the police officers’ received, either wounding or grievous harm. But other than that it will be obstruction for those who would have caused the persons arrested to have escaped from the police and those persons who were detained and subsequently escaped, that is also resisting arrest or escape from lawful custody.”

Reporter

“Sir, has the investigation concluded as yet?”

Chester Williams

“No it is still being investigated.”

Reporter

“So it is not right to say that the police were harmed by the villagers. The investigation continues and the circumstances are still not clear?”

Chester Williams

“That is obvious; the police were harmed by them. There is no question about that. That part of the investigation we are sure of, that the police were injured by them so once they are caught them will be dealt with for the injuries the police sustained.”

Reporter

“And in regard to the shooting of the residents out there…”

Chester Williams

“What about it? If the police is the one who shot them the police did so in self defence and so at the end of the day like Ii said, once they are released from the hospital they will be dealt with by the police.”

The COMPOL adds that the Chairman of San Victor Village is cooperating with the police in an effort to ease the tension between residents and the department.
