This was the scene on Saturday night on Bishop Martin Street in Santa Elena Town. Men and women consuming alcohol and socializing in front of Blue Sky Restaurant before an argument escalated into a violent brawl which led to one man being killed.  More than twenty persons were present when bottles began to be hurled and threats and insults were shouted among two warring groups. Some of the eyewitnesses immediately removed themselves from the area, leaving the men to their fight. Security footage from the neighboring 88 Supermarket captured who started the brawl. It was this man in blue who approached some men at the restaurant and threw a bottle. From there all hell broke loose. The video captures twenty- six year old Berrisford Budna joining the brawl. He is seen here in a white shirt, throwing bottles at another man. Investigators say that Budna then left the brawl but was followed by some persons. He was later found dead with two stab wounds to the body.

“What police know so far is that sometime after ten p.m. there was a fight outside an establishment on Bishop Martin Street which was later joined by Berris Budna who got in the process and hit someone who was involved in the fight. There after he left the area and was followed by some of those persons. San Ignacio police were called to an area on Bishop Martin Street where upon they observed the motionless body of one Berris Budna, twenty-six year old of a Hillview address in San Ignacio, inside a yard. He was transported to the San Ignacio Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead.”

The shocking news of Budna’s death quickly found its way to his sister, Kayla.

Voice of: Kayla Budna

“ I was like “no”, I cannot be. He received two stab wounds, one in the heart and one in the stomach. When I reached there, it was Berrisford. Berris was a happy person. He always had a smile on his face, always dancing and giving joke. He no mess with anybody.”

Investigators are treating Budna’s killing as a “death investigation”.

ACP Joseph Myvett

“You would want to look at the fact that when the evidence is put together that evidence will be submitted to the DPP for her to give her direction. He became a part of the fight at some point. He was not initially involved in the fight but he became a part of the fight at some point.”

And at this point, Budna’s family is clamoring for justice.

Voice of: Kayla Budna

“He is the second person who we have lost due to violence and we really want justice because it is not nice. It is a heart ache and it hurt us. We as sibling, it is not nice.”

Budna will be laid to rest on Saturday. Reporting for News Five, I am Hipolito Novelo.
