Task Force to Look at Permanent Solution to New River Crisis

According to D.O.E., the New River catchment is currently facing the worst drought seen in recent times. This drought was forecasted by the National Meteorological Service which has collected data showing that rainfall for this year’s rainy season has been the lowest since 1983. This extreme drought combined with the vulnerability of the New River is a major factor that is causing deterioration of the river. Mai says that this problem won’t be easy to fix and it will need a long term solution which the recently formed task force is looking into.

Jose Abelardo Mai, New River Task Force

“This is not going to be an overnight solution. There is no overnight solution nowhere in the world. There is a plan in place to manage the entire water shed and that plan is already being develop. It will involve the community, it will involve all the farming community. It will involve the stakeholders; those that use the river and it is for a long term but yes it is in place.”

Hipolito Novelo

“We knew a drought was coming but yet we didn’t monitor the situation in the new river or anything.”

“I think that no one took this matter seriously and I will indict myself in that too. You know, every year it is common. You pass a certain part of the river and it smells, it stinks but we never pay it attention. It’s a normal year, it rains one month after and that scent is gone but that is not the case this year, right. And this year it’s a phenomenon. No rainfall, high temperatures, water warming up, you have the algae bloom, oxygen depletion so nobody took this matter seriously.”
