Time to Permanently Address New River Crisis

Minister of Fisheries, Forestry, the Environment and Sustainable Development Omar Figueroa today commented on the declining health of the New River and the economic, health and social havoc it has been wreaking on the Orange Walk community. The effects of the pollutants in the New River are having an amplified effect on the environment due to the drought, increased temperature and lack of oxygen. Minister Figueroa admits it is time to find a long term solution to this impactful environmental problem.

“We are at a point where we just can’t worry about cleaning up the fish kills anymore which we have started to do to try to release that stench but something more drastic needs to be done. I don’t want to discuss what we are looking at right now but within the next day or two we will take some more serious measures to see if we can get the river o start moving down a little bit and get that stench further down. But I think the problem will not go away until we get some serous rains and even when we do get some serious rains the experts are saying that it might get a little bit worse before it starts to get better because it will start bringing in a lot of what’s all in the river banks and stuff will start washing in. So the river needs a long term strategy to really look at it. We don’t have a lot of baseline date that we need to start working on that river. I have been talking to a few people I think because of the uniqueness of the river and its vulnerability, unlike any other system in our country, to the impacts of climate it lends itself to a really  meaningful long term project to address this situation and to ensure that it does not happen again.”
