The life of Dr, Jane Usher celebrated by family and friends

The life of the late beloved Jane Usher was celebrated today by family and friends at a symbolic laying of a wreath on her grave at her home on the Philip Goldson Highway. Today, Miss Jane would have celebrated her one hundred and second birthday. The Usher family was joined by representatives of the People’s United Party, the Belize City Council, the United Women’s Group and Holy Redeemer Credit Union. The iconic Miss Jane passed on December twelfth last year at the age of one hundred and one. Among those who addressed the gathering were Belize City Mayor Bernard Wagner and P.U.P. Chairman Henry Charles Usher who spoke on behalf of the P.U.P. Party leader who was not in attendance for medical reasons.

“I think witnessing somebody contribute so greatly to their country is no recurring thing either. In fact I believe some of us will not achieve in our entire lives, what Mrs. Jane achieved in half of hers. It satisfies the mind to think that although death never comes too late, there was a reason why Mrs. Jane was one of the chosen few that outlived so many.”

“Each time she was called upon to serve, Mrs. Jane served and each time she served with distinction and each time she served with success. And this is why we are here today. Not just to celebrate her more than one hundred years of life on earth, but so that we may never forget how extraordinary Mrs. Jane was. She is one of our truest examples of a formidable woman and more so a true example of a Belizean Hero. Mrs. Jane is with the angels in paradise but her legacy lives on and for this we will always be grateful and for this we should always celebrate.”

Doctor Jane Usher is the sister of the Father of the Nation Right honorable George Cadle Price. She was born in 1917 and went on to build a legacy of her own. She was the longest running C.E.O., holding that position at the Holy Redeemer Credit Union for decades. In her political life, she was an outstanding member of the People’s United Party and served as Minister of Health and Cooperatives. She also served as president of the Senate.
