A majestic mural in Majestic Alley

A Cuban artist has painted a huge, colourful mural in Majestic Alley, Belize City. The public painting, inspired by faces and the tropical climate of Cuba and Belize, was done by visiting Cuban painter Carlos Rafael Gonzalez Barban. It was organized by artist Gilvano Swasey. Today, Swasey spoke with the media to share the artist’s thinking behind the mural and how it celebrates the close ties between Belize and Cuba.

“He is from Cuba, an island which is Caribbean and very Belizean too. He was invited to come and judge the carnival and having an exhibit at the image factory, he wanted to do something that connects Belize with Cuba; something that he could share with the community. For the mural, the inspiration is looking at all the faces. This is his style. Back in Cuba he usually does large murals. He looks at all the faces and he wanted to do something that reflects and brightens up the community. The image that was here before was old and there a long time. So, he wanted to put something new that people could reflect on and get inspired by it.”
