Clear The Land Weighs in on Bus Situation

Edmund Castro

Minister of Transport Edmund Castro has been involved in the negotiations with the B.B.A.  While he has championed the cause of the local tour operators, he says that the industry-wide consultations were necessary in order to acknowledge the concerns of other tourism stakeholders, including the Belize Hotel Association. He attributes the delay in arriving at a solution to the time that the exercise has taken and while hotel owners may not be pleased with the outcome, the concerns of the transportation industry must be addressed.

Edmund Castro, Minister of Transport

“I think I heard the Attorney General say something like rapidito fast kinda thing. Everybody would want things right away, overnight instantly but the world doesn’t spin like that. Even the world spin slow but in the negotiation, back and forth , I think we…and I have always been a minister of transport that looks after the interest of the local bus operators, taxi men, hence one of the reason from the time we met. I had a problem with some of those buses and busitos, going, bypassing the terminal. Going to the San Pedro Water Taxi, that foolishness has to stop. We have to halt that. So I have always been an advocate to try and see how we can best have them share more for the bus operators, the taxi men, whether it is the Benque taxi operators, whether if it’s the one from the terminal, going, taking tourist to the water taxi and the water taxi vice versa. So, I think today has been a great day for the bus operators and the taxis throughout the country. We will try and make sure…do our utmost best to make sure that this thing works. We will try and see that the more dollar that could be s=pent in our country is better for not just me, but is better for the bus operators, it is better for the hoteliers, it is better for the country.”
