Belize Red Cross Launches Monetary Appeal for the Bahamas

The Belize Red Cross Society in response to the devastation left by Hurricane Dorian in the Bahamas and in solidarity with the thousands of thousands of persons affected, today launched its monetary appeal. The northern islands of Abaco and Grand Bahama have been catastrophically impacted by Hurricane Dorian, the strongest and most sustained Category Five hurricane ever to be recorded in the region. The Belize Red Cross will send funds to the Bahamas Red Cross in Nassau to assist those most in distress. Director General Lily Bowman says that the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies has always proven to be steadfast supporters of humanitarian needs such as during this tragedy.

“We are asking for cash only because of course in kind donations will be costly to move from Belize to the Bahamas especially in light of closure of ports and airports. In times like this, the international federation is very quick to support national societies that find themselves in the affected areas. Belize had many occasions in the past where the international federation came to our aid. So now I believe it is just fair for Belize to once again because we have done it before to do our part to support our fellow Caribbean people that are suffering so much in the path of Hurricane Dorian.”

“What is the goal in terms of the local Red Cross?”

“The goal of the local Red Cross is not set. We will appreciate as much as we can collect.”

As more assessments are carried out, further appeals may be launched in the coming days. Cash donations can be deposited to the Belize Red Cross appeal accounts at Heritage Bank, Belize Bank, Scotia Bank and Atlantic Bank branches throughout the country.
