Couple and their two-year-old son ambushed by gunmen in their home

A horrifying home invasion has left a couple in shock in San Lazaro Village in the Orange Walk District. As Romeo Carrillo and his common-law-wife, Rubia Bijil try to move on with their daily routines, the attack is etched in their memory. Today we visited with the couple at their home where we met Bijil. She preferred to share her terrifying experience off camera. She told us that on Saturday night heavy rainfall prevented them from opening their business, a small pub, which is located adjacent to their home. The couple went to sleep along with their two-year-old son.  Shortly before ten o’clock there was a loud bang. Thinking it was just thunder, Carrillo decided to get up but as he did, he was met with armed intruders who had made their way into their bedroom. Three men stood in the room. Two of them had their faces covered and wielded firearms. The men demanded money and ransacked the entire room. In the process, they moved the couple and their child to another room where they kept demanding that they hand over money. The men tied Carrillo’s hand and feet behind him. They also asked that Bijil place her son on the bed and then bounded her as well. They continued to interrogate the couple for about an hour, demanding money and even threatened to rape Bijil if they didn’t point them to the money. During the interrogation, one of the men stabbed Carrillo five times on his right shoulder. He was also hit over his right eye with the firearm which caused a cut wound. The men also kicked Bijil on her face and the left side of her stomach. Bijil says at one point one of the men covered her son’s mouth since he woke up and began crying. The men found a wallet containing over one thousand dollars which they took. They also took three cell phones and a gold bracelet. After they left the house, Bijil managed to untie herself and assisted Carrillo. They immediately sought assistance. Both were treated for their injuries and released. Police are looking for three men in connection with this incident.
