Devaun Mascal Gunned Down in Midnight Execution

Devaun Masca

Twenty-five-year-old Devaun Mascal, was gunned down in front of his house around midnight on Saturday. Mascal was with his girlfriend who escaped uninjured in the shooting. He had just exited his vehicle and was checking the battery poles of his car when a gunman opened fire hitting him multiple times and then fleeing in a get-away car. Now, it is not known what led to his murder, but Mascal resided at the property where a huge drug bust took place. The owner of the property, Lynroy Longsworth is spending time behind bars at this time for the July bust which yielded police more than fifty-three pounds of marijuana. Here is News Five’s Isani Cayetano.

On July sixteenth, a team of law enforcement officers stormed this property near mile four and a half on the Philip Goldson Highway.  The raid yielded a substantial quantity of compressed high-grade cannabis.  It also led to the arrests of two individuals.  Six weeks later, that residence was the scene of a deadly shooting where a twenty-five-year-old was ambushed and rubbed out in a hail of bullets on Saturday night.

Supt. Hilberto Romero, Crimes Investigation Branch

Supt. Hilberto Romero

“On Saturday, August 31st, around midnight police responded to a shooting incident at mile four and half on the Philip Goldson Highway.  Upon their arrival they found the lifeless body of Devaun Mascal, twenty-five-years-old Belizean of that said address.  Information was obtained where it was revealed that around that time the deceased arrived at his house along with his girlfriend when he was approached by a male person who pulled out a firearm and fired several shots at him.”

As many as five shots were fired in Mascal’s direction and despite an attempt to escape with his life, he was mortally wounded.  According to police, the victim had just arrived at home and was attempting to remove the poles from his vehicle battery when a lone gunman surfaced.

Supt. Hilberto Romero

“He received one gunshot injury and was pronounced dead upon arrival at the KHMH.  Several persons have been detained and interviewed, however, they had to be released as the case requires more investigation.  One vehicle so far has been impounded reference the investigation.”

The property where the incident occurred was also occupied by thirty-four-year-old Lynroy Longsworth who has been remanded to the Belize Central Prison until September twenty-fourth after being busted with fifty-three pounds of marijuana on that mid-July morning.  Police are yet to make a connection, if any, between both incidents.  Until then, a motive for Mascal’s murder remains undetermined.

“We are working on that at this time.  He had recently moved to that area to live and we are following several leads.”

“Is he known to police?”

Supt. Hilberto Romero

“I will not go into that, but he’s an ex-coastguard member.”

Mascal’s killer reportedly fled the scene of the shooting in a vehicle that was waiting nearby.  It is the suspected getaway car police say they have since impounded.

Supt. Hilberto Romero

“We confiscated one vehicle and it is now impounded at the police station.”

News Five reached out to Mascal’s grieving family earlier today, they respectfully declined comment.
