Patrick Faber Launches Simultaneous Leadership Campaigns Ahead of 2020

Deputy Prime Minister Patrick Faber hosted a convention on Sunday at the Civic Center. While the convention was to endorse him as representative for the Collet Division, which he has won for four consecutive terms,  it was more about the man who wants to succeed Prime Minister Dean Barrow as leader of the UDP. The event was held within months of the party convention next year February where Faber will be going up against John Saldivar of Belmopan.  The theme for the event was Path for the Future, as Faber placed himself as the man to carry the UDP forward. Supporters were bussed in from seven constituencies for the revelry but noticeably absent were Prime Minister Dean Barrow and a host of other area representatives. News Five’s Isani Cayetano reports.

A change in the leadership of the United Democratic Party is on the horizon, following the long announced retirement of Prime Minister Dean Barrow.  It is yet to be determined when the party leader will demit office; nonetheless, the race to succeed him, ahead of the November 2020 general elections, is officially underway.  On Sunday, Collet Area Representative Patrick Faber hosted an endorsement convention at the Civic Center here in Belize City where scores of supporters gathered for an afternoon of activities.

Patrick Faber

“I, Patrick Jason Faber, do solemnly swear that as United Democratic Party standard bearer for the Collet constituency, I will work diligently to bring victory to our United Democratic Party.  I pledge to be true and faithful to the principles and ideals of the party.  I will uphold the party’s constitution and will work hard to the very best of my judgment and ability.  So help me God.”

The administration of an oath of office, during which the Deputy Prime Minister pledged his commitment to the tenets of the party, formally commenced a rally where Faber’s bid for the position of maximum leader was also cemented.

Patrick Faber

“We must take to the streets to register new voters, to engage every Belizean, young and old, but especially the young.  All this, ladies and gentlemen, will take energy that only one candidate in this race has and is willing to give.  The victory in 2020 can only come if we are able to inspire a new generation that the UDP under Patrick Faber is the right choice for Belize.  Hear me now, when I say to you my friends, I am up for that challenge.”

Having represented voters of Collet for four consecutive terms, Faber’s candidacy is uncontested.  But his ambition to lead the UDP and the country of Belize in 2020 will first see him take on his friend and intra-party opponent John Saldivar.  Until then, Faber acknowledges the work of Prime Minister Barrow in laying the foundation for his leadership aspiration.

Patrick Faber

“I give a maximum salute to the man who has captained this ship through this era and I thank him for his stellar leadership, party leader and Prime Minister, the Right Honorable Dean Barrow.  We thank you sir.”

But the object of Faber’s gratitude was noticeably absent from the gathering, perhaps as a show of impartiality where it concerns his potential successor.

Patrick Faber

“The prime minister is sacred in all of this, in my view.  I saw in the last convention where he in fact decided that he was not going to involve himself in campaigning for either candidate and I believe that is his position in this case as well.  So I am hoping for that and if that is the case then I know that this can be a fair race to the leadership.”

“You said this is the launch of the campaign but how do you time it when you don’t know when the prime minister is going?  Is that an issue in how you deploy your resources, how you activate your campaign?”

Patrick Faber

“The launch of the campaign to the February ninth convention, and so there is a definite date for that, but as I said, I am going to run a simultaneous campaign.  While it is that I will campaign to prepare myself for that February ninth date, I will also be helping my colleagues to prepare for the larger dance which is the general elections of next year.”
