Audubon holds 40th A.G.M at Cockscomb

Story PictureThe fortieth Annual General Meeting of the Belize Audubon Society was held this past Saturday at the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary. Two hundred members from across the country attended and elected a new Board of Directors for the fiscal year. The meeting was also used to emphasize recent achievements and the strategic plan the organization has in place for the next four years. Advocacy Programme Manager, Amanda Acosta told us more about the environmental agenda.

Amanda Burgos-Acosta, Advocacy Prog. Mgr., Belize Audubon Society
“We basically highlighted some of the activities that we’ve been doing for the year. We spoke about—for insistence, we had a wet land campaign this year, we also had continued community outreach. We went on to have a membership, we’ve been very involved in our membership this year; recruiting, we have a new database and data management system. We’ve had serious infrastructural improvements out at cockscomb basin and at half moon Caye. We’ve also had a number of specific initiatives, for instance, visibility wise, we had the Today show which was—we are very proud that we are getting international recognition for our work and bringing the attention to the Belizean environment. About a month ago we sent out nominations for our board and we sent it to the media houses and we put out there. Basically there is a nomination process for our board, one of the main criteria’s is you have to have been a member of the Belize Audubon Society for a number of a number of years. We’re also looking for people who are willing to make that commitment; it is a voluntary position as many as our boards are in Belize. So we want committed people, committed to the environment, to the Audubon Society, our vision, our mission.”
