S.W.U. Protests Ministry of Health over Inadequate Health Services in the South

There was a late evening protest in Dangriga where members of the Southern Workers Union this evening protested in front of the Southern Regional Hospital. The hospital has been plagued by a long list of problems ranging from a dysfunctional morgue to lack of mediation and equipment.  The S.W.U. is advocating for better treatment for hospital staff as well as better medical care for the community in the south of the country. Located in Dangriga, the Southern Regional Hospital provides essential service for thousands of Belizeans weekly.  The S.W.U., however, says that the services lack quality compared to other health institutions across the country. S.W.U. President Glen Lewis says that the south remains at the forgotten part of the country and is demanding that those in power invest time and money to improve health services in that region for the community.

“Medicine is not available. Medical supplies are not available at the hospital and more over the general staff of the hospital are in such dire stress because they are not equipped with the material that they need to do their job. SO this is a large issue that needs the attention of the government and the general public that something must be done in regards of healthcare. We are encouraging the government, we are not here to fighting in a negative way but in a positive way that the government may be aware that this issue is alive and well and that something needs to be done urgently.”

Lewis says that if their concerns fall on deaf ears they will stage a second demonstration next week.
