Commissioner Williams says New Hires for the TPU Should Send Positive Message

Chester Williams

Today, we met Commissioner of Police Chester Williams at a graduation ceremony for new recruits in the Tourism Police Unit.  At that ceremony, Commissioner Williams spoke with the media about the significance of hiring this new cohort.  This set of officers was recruited as a special complement to the unit, following the calls for increased police presence in tourism areas, particularly San Pedro.  Today, Williams says that the hiring should send a message to the international community that there is commitment to tackle crime in Belize. Here’s how Commissioner Williams explains it.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police

“Today is a significant day for us, in that you have seen we graduated twenty-three special constables who have been trained to police the tourism industry. It is important that we send the message out to the police that we police the tourism industry and we do so appropriately. Yes, we know that the twenty-three is not all that we want but it is a start in the right direction.   This is a special cohort to be able to boost our numbers in San Pedro and Placencia especially. In addition to this cohort, we have purchased additional equipment for tourism police officers to use. Next week we will be handing over these equipment to the TPU for use in San Pedro.”
